A flyer at the information centre of the Sapporo Station caught my eyes – Taka Kikukawa Exhibition at Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo.

Taka Kikukawa, born in Sapporo in 1910, created large paintings of women, focusing on the importance of life and being, while fighting against illness for many years. Unlike Frida Kahlo, who also suffered from ill health throught her life, Kikukawa lived to 80.

What moved me most were two enormous paintings of silent and naked women during the Great Tokyo Air Raid of 10 March 1945, which burned down 40% of Tokyo and killed 100,000 civilians overnight.

The exhibition runs from 18 April till 17 June 2015.

The museum also presents a fun exhibition called “Touching Sculpture”, where visitors are encouraged to touch various sculptures. I closed my eyes, felt the shapes and textures of each sculpture with my hands and enjoyed tactile sensations.
