Mongolia, May 2026

I decided to visit Mongolia just before the tourist season. With only eight days to spare, where in this vast country should I go? Tentatively I aimed to ride a camel in the Gobi Desert and a horse on the Steppe. Blessed with a wonderfully kind and attentive guide and his beloved Toyota Prado, my 2000-km journey turned out to be a magical experience, filled with pleasant surprises, amazing landscape and heart-warming encounters. モンゴルを訪問したのは観光シーズンが始まるちょっと前。僅か8日で、この広大な国のどこに行けばよいのだろう。取りあえず、ゴビ砂漠でラクダに乗り、大草原で馬に乗ることを目標にする。幸いにも素晴らしいガイドさんに恵まれ（愛車のトヨタプラドを2000キロも走行！）、驚きと出会いと貴重な体験に満ちた、楽しい、思い出深い旅となった。（ツアーアレンジ：新ズーチトラベル）

DAY 1: Tokyo – Ulaanbaatar – Mandalgovi （東京→ウランバートル→マンダルゴビ）

DAY 3: Khongoriin Els – Bayanzag（ホンゴル砂丘→バヤンザグ）

Extremely windy. Nobody else is in the sight. めちゃ風が強かったホンゴル砂丘の頂上。見渡す限り誰もいない。

My camel. He doesn’t look his best as it’s a molting season. マイラクダ。毛が生え変わる時期なので、毛並みがちょっと情けないかも。

While planning a trip to Mongolia, I almost skipped the Gobi Desert and camel riding because I had seen the Gobi Desert in China and had ridden a camel there. In the end, my love for deserts and camels convinced me to include them in my itinerary. It was absolutely the right decision! In Mongolia, I rode camels in two different locations. Both times it was just me and the person leading the camel. As far as the eye could see, there was no one else. On the other hand, my camel ride in China was like this…

当初、「ゴビ砂漠は中国で見たし、その時ラクダにも乗ったし、モンゴルでは行かなくてよいかな」とも思ったが、砂漠大好き、ラクダ大好きなので日程に入れることにした。大正解！　中国のラクダ乗りと違いすぎる。モンゴルでは2か所でラクダに乗ったが、いずれも私とラクダを引いてくれた人だけ。見渡す限り他に誰もいない。一方、中国でのラクダ乗りは・・・。

Bankhar Dog (landrace livestock guarding dog in Mongolia) バンハル犬（家畜を守るモンゴルの在来種）

At every nomadic family’s home I visited, Bankhar dogs served as guard dogs. Despite being a large breed (up to 60kg), they have a long lifespan (15-18 years), and joint problems, including his dysplasia, are rare.

訪問したどの遊牧民のお宅でも、バンハル犬が番犬の役目を果たしていた。60キロにもなる大型犬なのに寿命が長く（15－18歳）、関節の問題が出るのは稀だとか。

We headed for Bayanzag (aka Flaming Cliffs), where the first dinosaur eggs were discovered. Nobody else was around (again!) Insanely beautiful. It’s definitely my favorite place on this trip.

恐竜の卵が発見されたことで有名なバヤンザグに向かう。また！貸し切り状態。超現実的な美しさ。今回の旅行で一番気に入った場所だ。

DAY 4: Bayanzag – Ongi Monastery – Kharkhorin（バヤンザグ→オンギ寺院→ハルホリン）

DAY 5: Kharkhorin – Elsen-Tasarkhai/Burd（ハルホリン→エルスンタサルハイ/ブルド）

DAY 6: Elsen-Tasarkhai/Burd（エルスンタサルハイ/ブルド）

Today’s schedule says “a full day horseback riding under the guidance of a nomad”. However, as Paagaa the nomad and his wife Doljin were moving their ger (yurt), I only got to ride once in the morning and once in the afternoon. They treated us to lunch, and we happily helped them with their move.

今日は終日乗馬！・・・のはずだったが、お世話になる遊牧民パーガーさんと奥さんのドルジンさんがゲルのお引越しということで、乗馬は午前と午後に一回ずつ。お昼ご飯をご馳走になり、また、少し引越しの手伝いをさせてもらった。
