Ethiopia, November 2018

A TV documentary director called me from Tokyo. “Can you help me out in Ethiopia?”
東京のTVドキュメンタリー映画監督から電話。エチオピアでの仕事を助けてくれないかという。

Of course! I had fallen in love with the country in the previous year during my first visit. (See Ethiopia, September-October 2017.)
もちろん！去年初めて訪問し、大ファンになっていたのだ。

The destination was Guassa Community Conservation Area (GCCA). I was asked to go there on recce for filming, scheduled early next year, and search for filming locations and people to interview with.
行先はグアサコミュニティ保護地域（GCCA）。仕事はロケハン。実際の撮影は来年早々に行われる予定だ。

Guassa boasts of a community-based natural resource management system known as “Qero”, which started over 400 years ago. It is also home to the Ethiopian wolf and the Ethiopian gelada baboon.
グアサは400年以上続く「ケロ」システムを誇る。コミュニティによる共同資源管理システムである。また、エチオピアオオカミやゲラダヒヒの故郷でもある。

Guassa is situated at 260 km north of Addis Ababa (the last 80 km from Tamaber is on gravel). It takes 6 hours by car. Altitude ranges from 3,200 to 3,700 metres above sea level. In winter, the night temperature can fall to −10 °C (14 °F).
アディスアベバから260キロ、最後の80キロは舗装されていない。車で6時間かかる。標高3200から3700メートル。冬は夜間の気温が－10度まで下がることもあるという。

It was already quite cold in November. At night, I was freezing in a sleeping bag, with two fleeces, tights, two pairs of socks, trousers and gloves. It was so cold even during the day that I wasn’t tempted to take a shower throughout my stay.
11月でも既にかなり寒かった。夜はフリース2枚、タイツ、靴下2足、ズボン、手袋で武装し、寝袋にもぐりこんで震えていた。昼間もかなり寒かったため、滞在中一度もシャワーを浴びる気にならなかった。
