I started this series for my East Meets Africa exhibition, which was sponsored by the Embassy of Japan, Pretoria, as part of the South Africa-Japan centennial celebration. Using well-known Japanese artwork, namely, Hokusai’s world-famous woodblock print series, I intended to create fun and interesting paintings that look familiar but unusual – combining elements from Japan and South Africa.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a painter and ukiyo-e woodblock printmaker in the Edo period. The paintings below are based on his woodblock print series, Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei).
